The Ancient Mercogliano’s Foundry: handmade artworks, religious items and ornamentations and so on.
Since 1940, in the area of Rione Sanita’ in Naples, in cave of tuff in Vico Tronari ai Cristallini 20, there is the Antica Fonderia Mercogliano, an ancient foundry in the heart of Naples. Their products are pretty much appreciate all over the world: from sacred furniture to ornaments through collections, door handles and ad hoc private services.
Relying on techniques known pretty much since the Bronze era, the craftsmen duo made up of Gennaro Mercogliano and his Polish colleague Wladeck has managed to maintain a unique style overtime which has led their business to serve people everywhere in the world. From Naples to Milan, Hong Kong, Dubai or New Delhi, each artifact keeps its own character.
What we do (process and techniques)
Until 1940, the Ancient Mercogliano’s Foundry made metal artigianals artworks realized by pressofusione (so-called shell molding), sand casting and lost wast casting with bronze, brass, zinc or aluminium.
From project to finishing, our business is focus on sacred furniture ornaments through collections, door handles and ad hoc private services and all is done handmade.
Our Techniques
Reproduction / Creation
The artwork is born from a pre-made model or proposed by our customers: the artwork is made by pressofusione (so-called shell molding) or with sand casting and lost wast casting using bronze, brass, zinc, aluminium.
Melting & Casting (sand casting and lost wast casting)
From the molds available or provided by our customers, using sand casting or lost wast casting, the mold metal (circa 400°) is poured over and leave cool down. Firstly (negative mould). The negative mould is filled with layers of liquid metal that recreate the rough model also called the positive mould.
Finishing and Coating
The finishing allows to remove to all the imperfections. Than the coating assigns to the sculpture the aesthetic and chromatic appearance desired.
